COOL AS A CAT

Image:Harry-truman.jpgIt took a lot to ruffle Harry Truman’s feathers.  Early on the afternoon of Nov. 1, 1950, two Puerto Rican nationalist tried to shoot their way into Blair House, where President Truman was staying while the White HOuse was being renovated.  One Secret Service man was killed and two others were wounded before the guards were able to kill one would be assassin and capture the other.

President Truman, who had been upstairs at the time, was unhurt and apparently unshaken.  Not only did he go out an hour later for a dedication ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, he kept the rest of his appointments that day and even took his usual walk the next morning.

Truman’s comment on the incident?  He brushed it off saying, "A president has to expect these things."  Give ‘em hell Harry!
