Being new to, and completely overwhelmed by, the sheer volume of technology in use on the web, sometimes I feel like a guy driving in a white out snow storm. Knuckles white on the wheel, wipers full blast, Slayer blasting from my vintage mp3 player and hoping for the best.
Great Scott Captain, it’s just too much!
Wired Campus at Chronicle.com shares a blurb regarding RSS feed aggregators. What are they you ask? Hell, I don’t know, but they say they are getting more sophisticated and are able to grab whole articles from your blog, post them at said aggregator like, Shyfter(Beta) or Slashdot and all discussion afterward takes place there, far away from your site.
I know there’s many, many more of these aggregators or social networks out there and I belong to quite a few of them, but after looking at it in this light, I am wondering if this is something I want to be a part of.
We join to allow others to share our work, in turn driving readers to our sites, where our advertisers nest, which in turn, hopefully equates to a case of Schlitz every few days.
I never looked at these sharing tools this way. Digg, Stumble, hell, this is exactly what most of them do!
But they are voluntary.
Some of the new technology like Shyfter is not.
It simply pull’s your full feed and builds a community around your work. Well Captain Crunch, I don’t like that one bit.
Why even blog if we can just Twitter and Facebook all day? It accomplishes the same thing doesn’t it? I like to look at Twitter as blogging for meth heads. Quick, furious and for the most part like a quickie in an Oyster Bar restroom. Fishy. Don’t even get me started with MySpace.
Well, I’m going to keep an eye on the horizon, monitor what’s out there, and possibly pull my account from some of these aggregators(?). Focus in a more concentrated area, and be more protective of my content.
In my hast, I may have spread myself too thin. And when you spread yourself too thin, at too many blogs, too many netwroks, your presence becomes diluted like a Bahama Mama cocktail with not enough Mama, becoming a less potent blogger.
Operating on a limited amount of smart juice, I need to make sure I don’t get diluted at all. How about you?

Well, since I blog to quiet the voices in my head, and not for $$, “scrubbers” stealing my content doesn’t really affect me all that much.
BTW, thanks. I now view Schlitz beer in a new light, having noticed the “L” for the first time… *heh*
(Most American mass manufactured beers are simply water filtered through horses, IMO. :-))
